Grand Canyon
UNITED STATES
The Grand Canyon, created by the Colorado River over a period of 6 million years, is 446 km long, ranges in width from 6 to 29 km and attains a depth of more than 1.6 km. During prehistory, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves.
Located in the heart of the American West, the Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The canyon flows (in terms of river miles) for 365km (227 miles), and reaches a vertical depth of 1829m (6000ft) and a width of 29km (18 miles). Activities within the park include hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fishing.
The Grand Canyon is divided into three geographically separated areas: the South Rim, the North Rim and the Inner Canyon. There are three visitor centres in the Grand Canyon National Park providing orientation guides and literature on the park’s history and facilities. All three visitor centres offer restroom facilities; those who wish to stay overnight in the park can choose from a variety of lodges, log cabins and campsites.
